From Lion Rock to Tea Hills: The Soul of Sri Lanka in 6 Days

 (5 Nights & 6 Days)

Plan

  • Airport pick up at Bandaranaike International Airport (CMB / Katunayake). Quick transfer to Negombo (approx. 20–30 mins depending on arrival terminal).
  • Afternoon: relax after the flight — beach, Dutch Canal boat ride, or a short lagoon/crab-fishing village walk.
  • Evening: seafood dinner at a beachfront restaurant (Negombo is famous for fresh seafood).

Overnight - Negombo

Plan

  • Depart early from Negombo to the Cultural Triangle (allow ~3–4 hours by road).
  • First stop: Dambulla Cave Temple — explore the five painted/cavernous shrines with Buddha statues and historic murals dating back to 1st Century BCE (Approx. 2100 years old). Good 1–1.5 hour visit.
  • Afternoon: climb Sigiriya (Lion Rock) or, for a quieter option, Pidurangala Rock for sunset views. Sigiriya is a UNESCO World Heritage site which was the fortress of King Kashyapa which dates back to 5th Century CE — allow 2–3 hours including gardens and museum. (Tickets and opening windows are managed on-site; early morning visits avoid heat and crowds).

Highlights

  • Frescoes, mirror wall, ancient water gardens, panoramic summit views.

Overnight – Habarana/Sigiriya

Plan

  • Morning:  half/day trip to Polonnaruwa (ancient city, UNESCO site) to see royal palace ruins of King Parakramabahu, Buddha statues, and Parakrama Samudra Reservoir. (History of Polonnaruwa Kingdom dates to 11th Century CE – 13th Century CE, therefore, expect an immersive heritage experience when visiting these ruins)
  • Late afternoon (seasonal): Minneriya or Kaudulla safari to try to witness the famous elephant gatherings (best June–Oct; otherwise, you can do a shorter safari or village experience). Expect a late-afternoon safari for best elephant viewing.

Overnight - Same as Day 02 (Habarana / Sigiriya)

  • Plan

    • Depart to Kandy after breakfast (~2.5–3 hours from Cultural Triangle).
    • Afternoon: visit the Temple of the Sacred Tooth Relic (Sri Dalada Maligawa) – which is housing the Sacred Tooth Relic of the Buddha. Dating mainly to the Kandyan Kingdom (17th–18th century). and stroll Kandy Lake and the market area. Attend an evening puja/ceremony if possible (it’s a moving cultural experience).
    • Evening: optional Kandyan cultural dance performance (traditional drumming and dance).

    Highlights

    • Temple of the Tooth, Kandy cultural show, local handicraft market.

    Overnight - Kandy

Plan (tea + scenic)

  • Morning: scenic drive into the hill country. Choose either:
    • Nuwara Eliya (colonial town, tea-plantation tours, factory visits and cool climate) — visit a working tea factory and tea estate tour + tasting.
    • Ella (if you prefer a shorter drive and iconic viewpoints like Nine Arch Bridge and Little Adam’s Peak).

Overnight - Nuwara Eliya or Ella

Plan

  • Depending on your flight time: transfer from Nuwara Eliya / Ella / Kandy back to Bandaranaike International Airport (CMB). Travel time to airport varies by origin (estimate 3.5–5 hours from the hill country to CMB — allow extra buffer for traffic).
  • If your flight is late in the day, you can stop in Colombo for a quick city drive-by or shopping (time-permitting).
