Early transfer to Kandy via scenic route (approx 3–4 hrs drive depending on stops). Optional stop at Pinnawala Elephant Orphanage en route (photo opportunity).
Afternoon: stroll around Kandy Lake and visit the Temple of the Tooth (Dalada Maligawa) — beautiful at dusk/when lit.
Evening: Kandyan cultural dance performance (optional). Overnight in Kandy (lake- or hill-facing hotel).
Morning visit to Royal Botanical Gardens, Peradeniya (photo-rich).
Drive through the hill-country roads toward tea country with stops at viewpoints and a tea factory/plantation for a short tour and tasting (great for close-up tea-plantation imagery).
Overnight either in Kandy (if you prefer slower pace) or in the Hatton/Nuwara Eliya area depending on train plan.
Option A: Private drive to Nuwara Eliya via Ramboda Falls & scenic hairpin roads (stops at Ramboda waterfall & lookout).
Option B (photography-favourite): Take the scenic train from Kandy toward Nanu Oya (Nuwara Eliya) to enjoy sweeping tea-terrace views — book seats early for the best carriage views.
Afternoon in Nuwara Eliya: Gregory Lake, Victoria Park, colonial-era townscapes at golden hour. Evening: warm hotel/tea-bungalow.
Very early start to Horton Plains National Park for the World’s End sunrise walk and Baker’s Falls — extraordinary highland vistas and misty plateaus ideal for dramatic landscape photos. (Leave hotel ~4:30–5:00am for the best light and cooler temperatures.)
Return to Nuwara Eliya for a relaxed late afternoon (tea gardens, tea-factory visit if not done earlier). Overnight Nuwara Eliya.
Drive or take the train south towards Ella. The road and rail both offer sweeping valley perspectives; the train segment between Nanu Oya / Haputale / Ella includes iconic scenes. tourhq.com+1
Afternoon arrival in Ella: easy walk to the viewpoint for panoramic valley views at sunset (Ella Rock viewpoint or Little Adam’s Peak as a gentler option).
Morning visit to the Nine Arch Bridge and wait for the passing train photo opportunity (classic Instagram/website shot).
Hike Little Adam’s Peak or part of Ella Rock (choose difficulty). Visit Rawana Falls and local tea shops. Sunset at Ella Gap or Diyaluma viewpoint if you extend further south. Overnight Ella.
After a relaxed breakfast and last morning viewpoint/photos, drive back toward the western plain. You can opt to stop in Galle (coastal fort town) if you want a coastal cultural contrast — otherwise head to a comfortable hotel near Colombo or Negombo for the final night depending on flight time. (Drive time back to Colombo ~5–6 hours from Ella; breaking the journey in Galle or Bentota is possible.)
Overnight near the airport (Negombo area) or Colombo city — choose based on the departure time on Day 9.
